Depanding on what type of software that you want there are many places to get programs/software.

www.download.com
First of all, you will need to get prepared to download files to a easy to find location in your computer. The easiest place to remember where to save files to is a DOWNLOAD directory/folder. The easiest location for this DOWNLOAD directory to be in the root or starting directory of your hard drive.
For DOS/Windows based machines this will be c:\download or a folder in c:
As most people on the internet, the easiest way to download software is to use you favorite web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Most software that will begin to download itself if the link that you click on is an actual downloadable file. Both Netscape and Explorer prompt you that you are about to download something. You should choose to SAVE AS. Save the file as whatever its default name is to the DOWNLOAD directory.
If you download a file that ends in .zip then you will need to download an unzipping program such as Winzip
If are using a Macintosh and download a file that end in .hqx then you will need an unstuffing program such as unstuffit
Disconnect from the Internet and shut down all programs running. Go to the DOWNLOAD directory/folder using File Manager, Windows Explorer, or the Hard Drive Icon depending on your computer's operating system:
For .exe files: double clicking on them can run These type files. They will either install themselves or expand. If it expands then hit the F5 key to refresh the screen. You will then see another .exe file. Typical installation files will be named setup.exe or install.exe. Sometimes the file might end in .bat - treat it as if it is an .exe file.
For .zip files: These files will need to be "unzipped" first. Unzip them using Pkunzip or Winzip - Extract the files to a different directory such as one call TEMP - That way you can delete the files from this directory when the installation is complete. Zip files will contain an .exe or .bat file once unzipped. Follow the instructions above once the files are extracted (unzipped).
For .hqx files (Macintosh): Double click on them to extract the files -> assuming you have already installed an unstuffing program. After the files are extracted, double click on the installation/setup icon for the program you downloaded.
For .sea files (Macintosh): These are self-extracting files. Double click on the file to extract it. Then, double click on the installation/setup program.
For all other file types: These are probably just files and not programs. Do what you wish to them.
Common Examples:

The bad news: It may not be possible. Check out http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download . The good news: Here's how to do it thru Windows 95:
Get connected thru your Dial-Up Networking connection. It probably says Shortcut to ISP (where ISP is your Internet Provider's name). Double-click this to start. Then, click the Dial button.
You are connected when you get a dialog box that says Connected at (a numerical speed like 28800).
Now, Click on the Start Menu Button in the lower left-hand corner. Go to Programs -> MSDOS Prompt.
At the MSDOS Prompt (C:>\WINDOWS):
Type - ftp ftp1.microsoft.com (enter)
At the login type - anonymous
At the password prompt type - your@emailaddress (enter) (Your email address as it normally appears)
Now you should be at - FTP>
Type - binary (enter)
Type - get /msdownload/ieinstall/msie301m95.exe (This will start the download)
You will get back to - FTP> when it is complete. This will take a long time because the file is 10Mb!
Type - quit (enter)
Type - exit (enter)
You are now back into Windows 95:
Click on the Start Menu Button in the lower left-hand corner. Go to Programs -> Windows Explorer.
You are now in Windows Explorer:
Open the Windows folder on the left hand side of the screen.
Find the msie301m95.exe file on the right (it may not have the .exe on the end of it).
Double-click this file to install it.
Congratulations! You are up to date and can surf the web by clicking on The Internet icon in the future to connect.
